Metlakatla is only 15 minutes away from Ketchikan by sea plane, or 1:20 by ferry. Starting in the summer of 2007, the new 15-mile Walden Point Road will provide access to the east side of Annette Island and to a short-distance ferry to Ketchikan.

The town boasts a marina, cafes, hotels, bed & breakfasts, art studios and gift shops, a fully-stocked market, an elementary school, a high school, banking services, and the Lepquinum Activity Center with its Olympic-sized swimming pool, sauna, fully equipped fitness room, and therapeutic massage services.

Located near the southern tip of Alaska, Metlakatla enjoys a temperate climate notable for its mild temperatures - staying above the freezing point for most of the year - and high precipitation. It is very similar to the climate in Seattle, a few degrees cooler in winter.
