Metlakatla Emergency Medical Service

The Metlakatla Emergency Medical Service (EMS) was formed to provide emergency care of all residents on the Annette Islands Reserve. The Metlakatla EMS consists of the MIC Volunteer Fire Department, Ambulance Service, Police Department, and Outpatient Medical Clinic. The Metlakatla EMS has responsibility for medical transportation (land, sea, and air), sea survival, dive rescue, disaster planning, and industrial safety training. These well-trained volunteers are available 24 hours a day to serve the residents on Annette Islands Reserve.

Emergencies when the Clinic is Closed

When the clinic is closed, call (907) 228-2559 for medical help; a health care practitioner is on call to consult for urgent needs. The on-call health care practitioner should not be disturbed in the middle of the night for problems that can wait until the clinic opens.

The following types of problems are best handled during regular clinic hours:

  1. Questions about test results
  2. Chronic problems that have persisted for more than a few days
  3. General health education
  4. Medication refills

For mental health emergencies, call the Metlakatla Police Department at (907) 886-4011. The police will notify a counselor.
